Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki

If you want to see and read what life in prehistoric and ancient Macedonia looked like, this is the museum for you. The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki houses exhibitions on everyday life in Macedonia through the ages - from prehistory until late antique. It may not be a huge museum like the Archaeological Museum in Athens but I highly recommend it as a place worth visiting while you're in Thessaloniki.

Opening hours: 
November 1 - March 31 - Monday 10:30 - 17:00, Tuesday till Sunday 8:30 - 15:00
April 1 - October 31 - Monday 13:30 - 20:00, Tuesday till Sunday 8:00 - 20:00

Tickets: adult €6, reduced €3 (with valid student ID), free entrance on every Sunday between November 1 until March 31.

Museum of Byzantine Culture

This is probably the best museum about the Byzantine Empire in Greece. It has been recently renovated which makes the visit even more enjoyable. I must admit I was impressed when I first went there - both by the size of the museum and by the quality of exhibits. The permanent exhibition consists of collections from pre-Byzantine, Byzantine, and post-Byzantine period, mostly from the area around Thessaloniki or Macedonia in general.

Folklife and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia - Thrace

This museum aims at telling the story of traditional culture, customs and everyday life of people of Northern Greece over the last century. Its collection comprises approximately 20,000 exhibits, such as agricultural tools, fishing equipement, carpentry and ceramics.

State Museum of Contemporary Art

The aim of the museum is to promote modern and contemporary art (mainly Greek, but not only). Here, you will find all kinds of work which can be broadly understood by contemporary art: paintings, photography, sculpture, and many more including extraordinary pieces of arts.

Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki

This place tells a story of the Jewish community which would contribute to the city's greatness. Expelled from Spain in 15th century, they came to Thessaloniki which quickly became one of the biggest Jewish diasporas in Europe. The museum exhibits concern the once rich Jewish history in Salonica, the great fire of Thessaloniki and also the tragedy of the Holocaust.

War Museum

The institution hosts exhibits related to the wars faought by the Greek army over the last century or so. The permanent exhibitions include the liberation of Thessaloniki in 1912, Greece during World War II and modern Greek military history in general. Also, here you will see a collection of military vehicles, incl. tanks and aircrafts.

Saturday and Sunday 10:00 - 17:00

Cinema Museum of Thessaloniki

Situated in a warehouse in the harbour, close to Aristotle's Square, the Cinema Museum of Thessaloniki is a true pearl for all cinematography fans. It houses a fairly big collection of exhibits related to Greek cinema - from its birth until contemporary times. Here, you will see cinema machinery and equipement, hand-made posters, photographs, and more. This is also the place where some of the screening during Thessaloniki International Film Festival take place.

Museum of Photography

In the same building, under the same address as Cinema Museum, there is located Museum of Photography. It is worth a visit while you are already visitng Cinema Museum. The institution's aim is to promote Greek photography and to tell its history.
